Towards the end of the 16th century, following the plague epidemic of 1585, the cemetery around St. Michael’s Church became too small. The local authorities at that time decided to set up the current central cemetery on the old Hajongard Hill, south of Cluj. That’s how the story began…
This month we can discover together the Pantheon of Transylvania: Hajongard Cemetery where most of the prominent personalities in the history of Cluj-Napoca and Transylvania found their resting place. But it is also a touristic spot and it is one of the largest cemeteries in southern Europe, with sumptuous noble tombs and funerary monuments of rare beauty and architectural richness, some been declared historical monuments. The oldest tombstone dates from 1599. Also the place where the religious and ethnic boundaries disappear and time expands. And this is reflected in the many architectural styles of funerary monuments. We will find here the eclectic, baroque, neoclassical, neo-gothic, neo-Renaissance, Art Nouveau and neo-baroque style. Let’s discover the stories of the people who lived in the city long time ago those who left their marks on Cluj, in one way or another. And more important to find out the legends which are every meter and corner of the Pantheon of Transylvania.
